1. What is a Gear Reducer Housing?
Also referred to as gearbox casings or reducer housings, these components form the load-bearing base and mounting datum for an entire gear reduction system.
They are far more than simple protective enclosures. Internally, the bearing bores, locating stops, and mounting datum surfaces directly dictate the assembly precision and mesh alignment of internal gears, shafts, and bearings. Externally, they provide secure mounting, load support, and environmental protection for the complete unit.
During operation, a housing must withstand radial and axial reaction forces as well as shock loads generated through power transmission, while maintaining enough rigidity to prevent deflection. It works alongside end covers and seals to create a closed lubricant cavity, dissipates heat from gear meshing via its walls and reinforcing ribs, and blocks out dust, moisture, and operating noise. Ultimately, it is the core structural component that defines the reducer’s overall transmission accuracy, running stability, and service life.
2. Core Features
Tight Geometric Tolerance Control
Critical bearing bores are fully machined — boring and milling — in a single setup, eliminating cumulative positioning error caused by multiple clamping operations. Concentricity is held to within 0.01mm, flatness of the mounting datum surface to ≤0.02mm, and bore pattern position tolerance to ≤0.015mm. This level of precision ensures proper meshing of all internal drive components, reducing operating noise and uneven tooth wear over time.
Structural Strength Tuned to Application
We optimize wall thickness and rib placement for each housing based on its specific load and duty cycle. Our standard material options, HT200 and HT250 gray cast iron, deliver excellent vibration damping and castability. For heavy-duty, high-impact applications, we offer ductile iron or cast steel grades. All materials are selected to resist alternating stress and shock loads, preventing housing deflection and joint face leakage over long service life.
Reliable Sealing and Environmental Protection
All mating faces and seal seats are precision machined to controlled surface roughness, delivering consistent, leak-tight oil chamber performance when used with standard seals. Every finished housing undergoes 100% air or hydraulic pressure testing to rule out leakage risks. For additional corrosion and environmental protection, surface treatments including shot blasting, liquid paint, and powder coating are available to suit outdoor, dusty, humid, and other harsh operating conditions.
Flexible, Customizable Configurations
We manufacture housings in multiple configurations: one-piece, horizontally split, and vertically split designs. Additional features such as mounting flanges, oil level ports, drain plugs, lifting eye threads, and inspection windows can be added to meet specific requirements. Designs are compatible with vertical, horizontal, and other common mounting arrangements.
3. End-to-End Manufacturing Capability
With our own in-house foundry and CNC machining facility, we deliver fully integrated production from raw casting to finished machined housing. This single-source approach cuts down on accuracy loss from multiple handling steps and streamlines communication for our customers.
- Blank forming: We select the optimal casting process — sand casting, low-pressure casting, or others — based on material grade and order volume. After casting, all blanks go through stress relief annealing to remove internal residual stresses. Each blank is then visually inspected and non-destructively tested to catch sand inclusions, blowholes, and other casting defects before moving to machining.
- Precision machining: Rough and finish operations are carried out on CNC lathes, vertical and horizontal machining centers, and boring mills. First-piece approval and in-process sampling checks are mandatory for all critical features, ensuring stable, repeatable dimensional and geometric tolerances throughout full production runs.
- Finishing & quality assurance: All finished parts receive standardized deburring, sand removal, and cleaning. They pass through leakage testing and dimensional sampling before being released to inventory. Full CMM dimensional inspection reports can be provided at the customer’s request.
