Product Definition
A pump impeller is a key rotating component in a pump’s flow system, transferring mechanical energy from the pump shaft to the conveyed fluid. This product is sand-cast from gray cast iron or high-chromium cast iron and typically consists of a central shaft bore, vanes, and flow passages. As the impeller rotates with the pump shaft, the vanes guide the fluid through the designed flow passages for fluid transfer. Key dimensions such as outer diameter, vane count, vane profile, and flow channel geometry are normally specified according to the pump design and customer drawings.
This product is supplied as a casting blank with its original sand-cast surface condition. Machining allowances can be reserved on the central shaft bore and other critical mating surfaces according to customer drawings, followed by machining to the required dimensions and tolerances. Dynamic balancing and heat treatment can also be supported when required. Material selection, casting quality, and machining accuracy can be specified according to the pump design and operating conditions.
Core Structure & Design Features
The impeller blank is sand-cast from either gray cast iron or high-chromium cast iron. Gray cast iron provides good vibration damping and machinability and can be used for general centrifugal pumps and sewage pumps. High-chromium cast iron offers enhanced wear resistance and can be selected for slurry pumps, sand-handling pumps, and other abrasive applications. Material selection can be specified according to the customer drawing, conveyed medium, and operating requirements.
Structurally, the impeller comprises three functional zones:
Central Hub & Shaft Bore — The circular hub incorporates a central through-bore. Machining allowances can be reserved according to the drawing for subsequent shaft installation and positioning.
Vanes & Flow Channels — Curved vanes around the outer section guide the fluid through the designed flow passages. Vane count, channel width, curvature, and other dimensions are specified according to the pump design and customer drawing.
Back Shroud & Front Shroud — The back shroud provides structural support and fluid guidance. Depending on the pump design, the impeller may use an open, semi-open, or closed configuration.
Sand casting is suitable for pump impeller blanks with complex vane and flow-channel geometry. After casting and cleaning, non-mating surfaces can retain an as-cast finish, while the central shaft bore and other critical mating surfaces can be provided with machining allowances. For high-chromium cast iron, heat treatment can be arranged according to the material system and customer requirements.
Application & Selection Guide
This product can be used in slurry pumps, sand-handling pumps, centrifugal pumps, and sewage pumps for fluid-handling applications in mining, metallurgy, wastewater treatment, and other industrial sectors. Selection should consider the pump type and impeller drawing specifications, including vane count, curvature, and outer diameter; conveyed-medium characteristics such as solid-particle content, corrosiveness, and temperature; material requirements; and whether machining, dynamic balancing, or heat treatment is required.
As a casting blank, this product can be custom-cast according to customer 3D models or engineering drawings for different pump models. Depending on project requirements, services can cover casting process design, pattern making, pouring, cleaning, and blank delivery, with support for subsequent machining, dynamic balancing, and heat treatment.
